OQPS Website FAQs

Questions

Questions Answered

Can I print off legislation which is featured on the OQPS website?

Yes. The Crown has waived its copyright in Scottish legislation.

How do I find amendments to Scottish Legislation?

All legislation published on this website is published as enacted or made. The Statutory Publications Office has developed a Statute Law Database (SLD) which will eventually comprise an updated version of all Acts of the UK Parliament and the Scottish Parliament incorporating within any single piece of legislation all of the amendments which have been made since its enactment.

Can we add a link to the OPQS site from our site?

Yes, we encourage the use of links to our site, as this in turn encourages the use of official information. Please note, however, that as a government site we cannot display a corresponding link back to your site.

I have a query regarding an item of legislation

OQPS is not involved in the creation of legislation and is therefore unable to respond to questions relating to its content. e.g. ‘why does this Act say this at section 3?’ or ‘What does paragraph 5 on page 7 mean’. The Explanatory Notes which are produced for new Acts of Parliament, Acts of the Scottish Parliament and Acts of the Northern Ireland Assembly may provide answers to these questions but generally it will be for an individual Government Department to provide answers to such questions.

How do I know if a piece of legislation is current (in force)?

All legislation published on this website is published as it was enacted or made – no updates to the text are made once it has been published. Users should therefore verify for themselves whether legislation is in force or whether it has been amended or repealed by later legislation. All commencement orders bringing into force parts of an Act and Regulations (including amendments and repeals) are published on this website as Statutory Instruments.

How long does it take for legislation to become available online?

The aim is to publish these documents on this website simultaneously, or within 24 hours at the latest, of their publication in printed form.
